OWC accused of degrading men
KUALA LUMPUR: The Obedient Wives Club (OWC) “degrades” Muslim men in the country and creates a perception that all of them want their wives to be what the club has been advocating and promoting.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said many fathers and husbands told her they were ashamed by the perception that men demanded certain “things” from their wives and would leave if they did not get it.
“I was also bombarded with questions when I was in Kazakhstan, asking if Muslim women in Malaysia are being subdued and easily pushed around by everyone and by their husbands.
“There is no such thing and women are not being treated badly here,” she told reporters yesterday after launching “Sporting RAS”, a luggage range by Ras Adiba Radzi.
The club made international headlines last week for its message that wives needed to obey and serve their husbands in every way, including being “better than a first-class prostitute” in bed.
Shahrizat said the OWC was only a small club and did not represent all Muslims in the country.
Shahrizat also warned that people should not manipulate polygamy to their benefit adding that polygamy should meet the conditions and be properly practised.
“People can accept it if polygamy in Islam is practised accordingly, but if one should misuse the practice and the word polygamy itself, it will lead to the collapse of the Muslim family institution,” she said.
